What does Proverbs 24:19-20 mean?

19 Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked; 20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out. (Proverbs 24:19-20 KJV)

Thomas Haweis

Verses 19-20: To envy the wicked, and fret at the dispensations of God’s providence towards them, is both sinful and unreasonable. For glittering as their prosperity appears,  there shall be no reward to the evil man, their possessions minister no substantial good, and they have no reward to expect hereafter, but the very contrary: the candle of the wicked shall be put out, their good things are often consumed in this world; at farthest, death at least will extinguish it, and rob them of all their comfort, and into outer darkness they will be cast, where is weeping and wailing, and gnashing of teeth: and shall we envy such a state?
