53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. 54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, 55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. 56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole. (Mark 6:53-56 KJV)
Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret
When they reached the land of Gennesaret—between Bethsaida and Capernaum—the people welcomed them eagerly. They recognized Jesus immediately (Mark 6:54) and knew the powerful works he did wherever he went. They also knew he usually stayed only briefly, so they were quick to make the most of his visit. They ran throughout the region and brought the sick on mats, since they couldn’t come on their own. There was no concern about catching a cold when they hoped for healing (Mark 6:55).
Wherever Jesus went—towns, cities, villages—people brought the sick into the streets and begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak. As many as touched it were healed. It seems this practice began with the woman who had the bleeding issue (Mark 5:25-34).
But we don’t read that they wanted to be taught by him—only healed. If ministers could cure physical illness, how many crowds would gather! It’s sad how much more people care about their bodies than their souls.
