What is the meaning of Luke 9:26?

For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels. (Luke 9:26 KJV)

Meaning

Being ashamed of Jesus means being unwilling to identify yourself as a follower of Jesus because of fear of embarrassment, humiliation, ridicule, or disapproval.

Examples

These are some examples of ways Christians express being ashamed of Jesus and His word.

  • In places where Christianity is a minority, some Christians express being ashamed of their faith by covering up their Christian identity or they do not let others know they are Christians.
  • Christians who are ashamed of Christ hardly say ‘God willing’. E.g. God willing, I will attend the meeting tomorrow.
  • Christians who are ashamed of Christ scarcely say, ‘By God’s grace.’ E.g. By God’s grace, I passed the test.
  • Christians who are ashamed of Christ never quote from the Bible or refer to the Bible. E.g. The Bible teaches that we should speak the truth always (Ephesians 4:25).
  • Christians who are ashamed of Christ feel embarrassed to carry a Bible with them.
  • A Christian becomes more ashamed of Christ if he hangs around with a bad company. In such a situation, he is ashamed to conduct himself as a Christian, and to fit in, he compromises on the word of God.
  • Christians who are ashamed of Christ do not find spiritual activities such as fasting, Bible study, and pray convenient.
  • Christians who are ashamed of Christ are shy to give a testimony of what God has done in their lives.
  • Christians who are ashamed of Jesus feel ashamed of appreciating others with the saying ‘God bless you.’
  • Christians who are ashamed of Christ scarcely use Christian stickers.
  • Christians who are ashamed of Jesus hardly evangelize, for they cannot stand the embarrassment of being seen by friends and neighbors preaching the gospel.
  • When a Christian who is ashamed of Jesus receives an award, in his response, he does not make mention of God nor shows any gratitude to Him.
