What does Luke 20:39-40 mean?

39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said. 40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all. (Luke 20:39-40 KJV)

The scribes commend Jesus

The scribes were students and teachers of the law, known for wisdom and honor, but most of them were enemies of Christ and his gospel. Some of them were present here in the temple while Jesus was teaching.

We see them commending Jesus for his response to the Sadducees about the resurrection. Certain scribes said, “Teacher, you have spoken well” (Luke 20:39). Even though they opposed Christ for not following the traditions of the elders, they acknowledged the truth when he defended essential religious doctrines. Many who call themselves Christians today fall short of even this level of honesty.

They were awed by Christ’s wisdom and authority (Luke 20:40). They no longer dared to question him because he had consistently outwitted all who challenged him. His disciples, though often confused, were sincere in seeking understanding and asked questions freely. But these opponents, being argumentative and insincere, held their peace.
