Divorce is a major problem. In fact, it was a major problem 2000 years ago. Moses was the first person that we know in history to do something officially about marital disintegration. Moses developed a legislation, introduced a bill in his constitutional course of leading a nation of over one million people; of course he had to deal with this social problem of marital disintegration. In Matthew 19, the Pharisees approached Jesus and asked Him of His view on divorce. Jesus answered the question, but He ignored the issue. Jesus, based on his answer, did not see divorce as a problem; rather, He saw it as a symptom. A problem has to do with a cause. A symptom has to do with a sign – a sign that something else is wrong. Divorce is like a pain in the body. When you have a pain in the body, the pain is not the problem; the pain is an indication that something else is wrong. The many problems in our families, such as disintegrating marriages and broken homes etc., are not the problem. The problem is that something else is wrong and divorce is its symptom.
