What does Luke 22:7-13 mean?

7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. 9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? 10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. 11 And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. 13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. (Luke 22:7-13 KJV)

The Passover with the Disciples

What a hopeful prospect there was of Christ doing great good by His preaching in the temple during the feast of unleavened bread, which lasted seven days, when the people came every morning, eager to hear Him. But now His focus shifts. He must begin another kind of work, in which He will do even greater good, for neither His suffering days nor those of His church are wasted.

Now we have the preparation made for Christ to eat the Passover with His disciples, on the very day when the Passover must be killed according to the law (Luke 22:7). Christ, made under the law, observed its ordinances, especially that of the Passover, to teach us to observe His gospel institutions, particularly the Lord’s Supper. He likely preached in the temple that morning and sent Peter and John into the city to prepare the Passover. Those who have others to manage their daily needs should use their freedom to serve God more fully. He gave instructions about where to go (Luke 22:9-10): they were to follow a man carrying a pitcher of water, who would guide them to the house.

Though Christ could have simply named the house, He chose this method to teach them to trust Providence step by step. They went, not knowing the full plan but trusting His word. At the house, they were to ask the master to show them a room (Luke 22:11), and he would do so willingly (Luke 22:12). Whether it was a friend’s home or an inn is uncertain, but they found everything exactly as Christ had said (Luke 22:13). Those who act on Christ’s word will not be disappointed. Following His directions, they prepared the Passover meal (Luke 22:13).
