What is the meaning of Hebrews 6:4-5?

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, (Hebrews 6:4-5 KJV)

Brethren NT Commentary

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, … if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance. This is rather a plain statement of a condition into which one may bring himself, from which he cannot be rescued by the Gospel means, because he has disregarded the Word of God and insulted all the divine agencies. (Compare Heb 10:29.) The conditions which bring him into this state are,

(1) if he was once enlightened, — had received the understanding of the theory of the Christian religion and had accepted the Word of Life in his heart. (Compare Heb 10:26,32.)

(2) If he has tasted of the heavenly gift, i. .e, the blessings, the remission of sin (Ac 2:38) and the peace with God. (Php 4:7.)

(3) If he was made partaker of the Holy Ghost. If the Holy Spirit had in fact come into him. (See Ac 2:38.)

(4) If he have tasted the good word of God, i. e., if he has fully shared the blessings which follow a complete obedience of the Gospel,

(5) If he has felt the strength or — power which God gives to his children to do his will acceptably in the midst of a perverse world, preparatory to entering the — world to come.
