What does Matthew 13:34-35 mean?

34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: 35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. (Matthew 13:34-35)

Prophecy and Parables

In these verses, we see another reason why Christ preached in parables (Matthew 13:34-35). He spoke this way because the time had not yet come for clearer teachings about the mysteries of the kingdom. Christ used parables to keep the people engaged and expectant, speaking only in parables in this sermon.

Christ tries all methods to reach people’s souls. If plain teaching does not work, he uses parables. This also fulfilled Scripture, as written in Psalm 78:2, “I will open my mouth in a parable.” and Psalm 49:3, “My mouth shall speak of wisdom”.

What the sons of Kora (Ps 49:3) and Asaph (Ps 78:2) said about themselves when instructing the people under the influence of the Holy Spirit was also fulfilled when Christ taught the people by parables.
