1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: 2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: (2 Peter 3:1-2 KJV)
Peter’s Reason for Writing to Them
The apostle, drawing toward the conclusion of his second letter, begins this last chapter by repeating the purpose of writing again to them (2 Peter 3:1-2). He mentions one reason for this second letter—the coming of scoffers, whom he describes (2 Peter 3:3-7).
He instructs and encourages them concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ for judgment (2 Peter 3:8-10). He emphasizes how Christians should respond to Christ’s return and the coming transformation of all things (2 Peter 3:11-18).
2 Peter 3:1: To better accomplish his purpose in writing—to keep them firm and faithful in remembering the gospel’s teaching—he shows his affection for them by calling them “beloved,” reflecting the brotherly love he exhorted them to pursue (2 Peter 1:17). Ministers must model both love and godly behavior.
He proves his genuine concern by writing the same truths again, though expressed differently. Since these truths are necessary and beneficial, he doesn’t find it burdensome to repeat them if it helps them hold fast to the truth.
To further reinforce his message, he reminds them to remember:
- The words spoken by the holy prophets, who were inspired, enlightened, and sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Because the Spirit had purified the minds of believers, they were prepared to receive and retain these divine truths.
- The commandments of the apostles of the Lord and Savior. Since the apostles were sent by Christ, his followers should respect what they declared as the will of the Lord. What God has spoken through the prophets and what Christ has commanded through the apostles should be often remembered. Those who reflect on these teachings will experience their spiritual power. Through these truths, the pure minds of believers are stirred up to pursue holiness with energy and perseverance.
