Matthew Poole’s Commentary

Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he was made a king in the kingdom of Judah. He lived in Jerusalem and ruled the kingdom for twenty-nine years. Kings who had preceded him were King Rehoboam, King Abijah, King Asa, King Jehoshaphat, Jehoram of Judah, Ahaziah of Judah, Queen Athaliah, and Jehoash of Judah.

Amaziah begins to reign well; kills his father’s murderers, 2Ch 25:1-4. Having hired an army of Israelites against the Edomites, at the word of a prophet he dismisses them, 2Ch 25:5-10; and with his own people overthrows the Edomites: the Israelites in their return home spoil some parts of Judah, 2Ch 25:11-13. Amaziah serves the gods of Edom, and despises the admonition of the prophet, 2Ch 25:14-16. He provokes Joash to his overthrow, 2Ch 25:17-21. His reign; he is slain by conspiracy, 2Ch 25:25-28.
